Hillingdon Allotment News  13: Growing cabbage

Hints on growing cabbage.

I would think that it is quite confusing for new starters when they first try to grow some crops all of the year round, and cabbage seems to fall into this category, what with different types and sowing/planting times, with some sorts like F1 hybrids, being ready all at the same time when you only want one, it does seem easier to buy them in the supermarket.

Well there are two cabbages that you can grow practically all the year round, they are both versatile, and it doesn’t take a lot of work to do it. ‘Duncan’ and ‘Durham Early’ both of which I have grown for a long time will give you plants for cutting for 7 months of the year and are easily available from a number of seed merchants. Choose whichever one you like and sow at monthly intervals throughout the year starting in March, with a last sowing in September/October for over wintering plants to be planted out in March. All it requires then is a hardy cabbage, sown in June/July, to see you through the winter weather.

Clubroot resistant cabbage

Cabbage ‘Kilaxy’ has now been on the market for a couple of years. It is said to be highly resistant to clubroot and is a breakthrough in the breeding of brassicas. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has grown this cabbage and the results that they have obtained. The information will be passed on in future newsletters.
